"Eyeballs on the road"

Recently finished the book from Gary Vaynerchuk, "Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook", or JJJRH, on Social Media. Besides an excellent overview of what is available, how to do things properly on the social networks and also how NOT to do things, there was a quote that is relevant here as well, as it ties in neatly with autonomous cars.


Gary frequently refers to marketers should go where the eyeballs (customers) go, so if they go to a platform, the marketing should follow there as well. With the advent of Social Media, eyeballs are more and more glued to a tiny screen, even at times when they should be on the road:

“With the instant access to social media made possible by mobile devices, there’s no such thing as undivided attention anymore. It’s not just that people are scrolling Facebook on their laptops while hanging out on the couch half watching The Voice. They’re sharing on Pinterest while crossing the street. They’re loading on Instagram while driving. And while they’re tweeting at the supermarket, they’re starting to ignore the expensive endcaps brands paid for at the end of the aisles, as well as the displays of candy and magazines in front of the registers. From a personal safety point of view, mobile social networks are a disaster—no one is looking where they’re going. But from a marketing perspective, the writing is on the wall: The fastest-growing marketing sector getting people’s attention is social media. The strict dividing lines between marketing categories can no longer exist—they must all be blanketed with a layer of social.” - Gary Vaynerchuk

So with more use of social media use, more autonomous cars make sense. But is it because it allows us to tweet safely, or because it allows for more marketing?
